Can't Get Organized at
Home? Here's Why
You really want to get organized
at home. You've been watching those home organization shows on
television. You've read all the home organizing books. You subscribe
to home organizing newsletters. You make home organizing to-do
lists a foot long...
So just why can't you get organized?
Here's one possibility to explain why your home is still cluttered
and you've yet to find that missing set of keys or eyeglasses
or maybe it's a missing tv remote. Could it be that...
...you're looking for a unique
organizing solution?
I publish a home organization
website and distribute a free home organizing newsletter. And
I sometimes shake my head in confusion or disappointment when
a reader cancels their subscription with comments such as these:
--nothing new here.
--I already heard all these organizing tips.
--not seeing any unique organization products.
I could go on but you probably
get the idea of the tone of these comments. Perhaps you've even
voiced them yourself at times, but in different words. Maybe
you said "well I want a product like this to organize x
at home but something with a little more sizzle".
What's really happening here
is these readers are just making excuses for not getting organized,
especially if they really do already know the fundamentals of
home organizing (as they claim). And they're looking for the
"magic"---the magical home organizing product and magical
home organization system that will help them get organized at
home. But as you probably know, magic is purely illusion. And
illusion is not functional at all. But true home organization
is all about function. See the problem with their reasoning?
There is no mystery to getting
organized at home. Almost anyone can do it if they really want
to do so. You will find home organization systems and routines
that work but you won't find any magical home organization systems.
And most home organizing products for sale at stores are functional,
not unique.
Let's face it, a box will always
be square, a shelf will always be comprised of horizontal and
vertical slabs of material, a closet rod will usually always
be tubular and in the shape of a bar. Yet all three of these
far from unique products serve many functional purposes for home
organization and storage. They weren't unique products ten years
ago. They won't be unique home organizing products in ten years
from now. They may come in different colors, materials or sizes
but they're certainly not unique formats. Yet they will consistently
assist you to get organized at home.
Quit looking for those unique
and magical organization products and systems and work with what's
available. Do anything else and what you're really doing is procrastinating
and making excuses to not get organized. That's not unusual for
someone who needs help getting organized. It is understandable.
But when you face up to that realization and "get over"
looking for unique
organization tips and products, you will be one step closer to
getting organized at home. Perhaps you will get organized permanently
this time when you realize that and move onward with your home
organization plan.
